Definition: (1) A device which is inserted into the body in order to replace or substitute for a function which has been lost or impaired. See endoprosthesis. Or to facilitate treatment. See port.
(2) A radioactive source in a small holder that is placed in the body, in or near a cancer. Syn: seed, capsule. See seeding.
(3) Time-released drugs placed under the skin are also called implants.
