Seeds of Hope
Chapter 6, page 65
patient could just capitulate, just put himself in the hands
of the first physician he encountered.
I started to sample the references. I found one web site
entitled My Story where men are invited to tell their stories of prostate cancer. These men are willing to share the
intimate details of their illnesses with the world. I made a
mental note that I might one day submit my story. I found
chat rooms for families as well as patients. Support groups
provided inspirational verses, stories of successes, advice,
and even more references. I learned that many universities
and medical centers supported web sites about prostate
cancer. Most were extolling the virtues of their facilities
and staff, but they provided a wealth of basic information
as well.
I found innumerable books about prostate cancer on
the net. A few phone calls and a credit card can produce
more than anyone could read. I read excerpts from a powerful book - Affirming the Darkness - by Chuck and
Martha Wheeler. They kept journals as they battled
Chuck's prostate cancer over eight years. Chuck ultimately succumbed to his cancer. Martha finished the
book. This deeply moving story illustrates how prostate
cancer profoundly affects both a man and his wife. I recommend it.
I even stumbled across a web site maintained by
Theragenics Corporation. This company manufactures the
radioactive seeds mentioned by Nick — good information.
I began frantically printing items as I found them on
the Net. I was so immersed and driven that I lost all track
to previous or next page
