didn't seem in a hurry and we had a good conversation.
He noted that, at my age and general condition,
I could expect to rebound from the operation
rather quickly. I told him I wasn't really worried
about recuperating from the surgery. I just hoped
I had some serious surgery to recuperate from,
because that would mean my lymph nodes were
clear and Dr. Scardino had in fact removed my
prostate.
Dick Howe had told me that when he woke up
in the recovery room, it took him twenty minutes
to find someone who could tell him whether his
prostate had been removed, and that this had
caused him considerable agitation. He had given
me a simple tip that, if I could remember it, would
spare me this problem. All I had to do was reach
down and feel my penis. If it had a catheter running
through it, the operation had been completed.
I shared that bit of intelligence with the resident.
He smiled but said that would not be necessary.
"Your prostate is coming out. I'm 99 percent sure
of that. I've been on this service for 8 months and
I haven't seen a single person with your numbers
who's had lymph-node involvement. You're
going to be fine." I decided to believe him.
Within a few minutes, I went to sleep and, with
the exception of the last two prostate-related
episodes of nocturia I would ever experience,
slept well until morning.
