Chapter Eight
Where Do We Go From Rock Bottom
[CONTINUED]
The physician responded without hesitation.
"I think Keith's suffering from depression, Virginia It's
very common after someone has had cancer."
I could hear him scribbling a note. "I want Keith to see the
chief of psychiatry here, Dr. Rome. If anyone can help, he can "
Dr. Barrett graciously offered to make the arrangements,
and later that day his secretary confirmed that Keith had an appointment scheduled for three weeks later.
Laptop Notes, January 10, 1996
When I said I wanted help, I thought maybe
Dr. Barrett would give me another kind of shot
or something, not suggest a psychiatrist!
It's just one more thing I have to hide.
Especially from Dad. All my life he's called
shrinks "quacks" and said the people who see
them are "weak."
Now I'm going to one.
Well, so what? Right now I'll use anything
or anyone who might be able to help me.
Journal Entry, January 15, 1996
I'm surprised Dr. Barrett suggested a psychiatrist. I
never would have thought Keith needed one - or that he'd
ever agree to actually see one.
But once again he's surprised me.
In a way, his quiet acceptance makes me sad. It shows
Just how desperate he really must be.
During the time Keith and I waited for his appointment with
Dr. Rome, our fighting eased dramatically. And our talking continued.
