Chapter 6
His Prostate and Me
recover fully. The important thing is that, after waiting the
mandatory total of five weeks before using the new implant,
the device worked perfectly.
"Although I thought it would be difficult to locate the
pump in my scrotum, it was easy. After approximately 30
pump strokes and a few minutes of time, I had an erection. It
was simple to use, involved no pain, and took little time to
activate. Most importantly, it functioned exactly like the
natural erections that I had enjoyed in years past. What more
can I say!"
My account of his surgery and recovery differs somewhat.
Although most men have an easy time with this particular
surgery, Dick did not. He was in great pain in the hospital
and despite my admonition to remain there, he insisted that
was feeling much improved and checked out of the hospital
far too soon. I do not blame Dr. Fishman, because Dick
answered all of his "How are you feeling?" with the "I'm
fine!" gusto of a man ready to get out of the hospital as fast as
possible.
This happens frequently with patients of both genders
but especially with males. Also, what I call the "98.6 factor"
came into play during his interchanges with the doctor. As
soon as people are in the presence of a doctor, they feel better

rushed their crying baby to the doctor's office with a
temperature of 104. Then when the doctor walks in the
examining room with the baby, the temperature slides down
the thermometer from 104 to a normal 98.6.
Dick's situation was similar. He was very ill, weak and in
pain. As soon as Dr. Fishman walked in the room, Dick felt a
bit better and told Dr. Fishman that he was doing well and
could go home. Having taken care of so many sick people and
having been in the same situation myself, I have seen and
experienced this behavior often. Although it feels emotionally
better to hold back complaints, it does not help the doctor
diagnosis your problem. Since Dick was more interested in
maintaining his status as a non-complainer rather than being
