His Prostate and Me

proceed with the penile implant surgery and once again become a paramour, thanks to a bionic part.

I was satisfied that he was in good medical hands. Dr. Fishman, who had helped Dick along the journey to potency, would be the surgeon. He was renowned in the field and had done many of these procedures. Dick asked me to come with him to several of his pre-op appointments with Dr. Fishman. Since we weren't married yet, I was taken aback and embarrassed both by the subject of the visit with Dr. Fishman and my role after the surgery. However, Dick needed someone to care for him once he got home from the hospital, so I decided that I should learn about his post-surgical medical requirements and be aware of what to do in case of an emergency. Fortunately, the nursing requirements were more in the line of bringing food and pills rather than bandages or some other treatment of the organ in question, so I willingly agreed to take the job.

When the day of the surgery arrived, I was there to hold his hand and act as a consoling companion during his short hospital stay. As you can imagine, I was not my usual chatty self with our friends when they asked why Dick was being admitted to the hospital for a few days. Instead of giving them explicit details, I tempered my conversations with, "It's a prostate cancer related problem, but don't worry. The cancer has not returned." My brief reply seemed to satisfy most people. Friends don't usually probe when something involves certain regions of the body, particularly the middle third.

After Dick was released from the hospital, I returned to Dick's house with him while he recovered. After you read my version of the recovery period, you will understand why. You will also see clearly why it is important to get a female's perspective on health situations.

The following is Dick's version of the surgery and the outcome:

"The surgery lasted a little more than an hour and was not difficult. My hospital stay was only a few days, and my recovery time at home was short as well: about two weeks to
