TRUS

Synonyms: transurethral ultrasound of the prostate (TRUSP)

Definition: drawing showing biopsy done with ultrasound probe Acronym for transurethral (TRANZ-yoo-REE-thral) ultrasound. A procedure used to examine the prostate gland with ultrasound. An instrument is inserted into the rectum, and sound waves bounce off the prostate. These sound waves create echoes, which a computer uses to create a picture called a sonogram.

This diagram shows how a biopsy is done but it is the same for transrectal ultrasound, just minus the needle.

A video is available at Phoenix5 that includes this procedure, including showing the computer screen. You can see a frame from the video and red about the video first.
