About the selected illustrations from

Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer
by Patrick C. Walsh, M.D., and Janet Farrar Worthington

Eight illustrations from Chapter 8 that show Dr. Walsh's procedure were selected because they are the best diagrams I have seen showing the placement of the nerves that effect an erection and how a prostatectomy (nerve-sparing or not) is conducted.

They were scanned from the book and, when the words could not be easily discerned, they were erased and replaced in PhotoShop. The images were then sized for the Web page and optimized to speed download time, which runs between 10 and 15 seconds at 28.8. Figure 6 is the largest.

Captions are verbatim from the book, for each illustration.

Illustration credit is given to Leon Schlossberg, from Patrick C. Walsh, "Radical Prostatectomy: A Procedure in Evolution" from Seminars in Oncology 21 (1994) 662-71. They are used here under the fair use doctrine, solely for the purpose of review and education at no cost by a nonprofit corporation.

Leon Schlossberg was a noted medical illustrator who died of colon cancer in 1999, at age 87. Johns Hopkins has an obiturary at their site.
