In the process of attempting to provide state-of-the-art guidance and clear counsel for the benefit of the subscribers to various prostate cancer Internet discussion lists, the idea for A Primer on Prostate Cancer was born. Many of the suggestions for topics in the Primer came from men who have experienced prostate cancer and from their partners. The Primer's primary purpose is to utilize the clinical experience of a medical oncologist who has specialized in prostate cancer to address the issues and realities encountered by men and women touched by prostate cancer.

Co-authored by Stephen B. Strum, M.D., an internationally recognized expert on prostate cancer, and Donna Pogliano, partner of a warrior in the battle against prostate cancer, A Primer on Prostate Cancer-The Empowered Patient's Guide integrates the perspectives and expertise of this caring physician who is at the top of his profession with the perspectives and insights of a layperson who understands the questions newly diagnosed men and their families need answered, but may not think to ask.

The goal of the authors in creating this book was to direct men and their families to a strategy of successful management of prostate cancer. Within the 368 pages of this full-color in-depth book on prostate cancer, all newly diagnosed men have access to the information that those who have experienced prostate cancer feel is indispensable. Armed with this education, they can thus become empowered patients, involved in intelligently managing their own care.
