Chapter 6
His Prostate and Me
life taking care of the bottom half of bodies, humans and
otherwise?"
Dick's post surgical troubles served to remind me of how
important it is to check everything from medications to other
bothersome requirements, such as making sure an enema is
given before surgery. The fact that Dick did not have an
enema prior to the surgery resulted in an episode the next day
that caused him excruciating pain for more than an hour.
I think it is also vital to be present at the hospital during a
patient's stay to help facilitate their recovery. Nowadays with
the problem of understaffing in some hospitals, it is prudent
to stay in the room with the patient at least until he is
comfortable and mobile. Recently, a friend of ours took a
nasty fall in his hospital room. Disoriented from his pain
medicine, he was not clear about his whereabouts when he
awakened. He headed for the restroom not realizing he was
hooked up to an IV and fell on the way. After inadvertently
tearing out the needles, he called for help but no one heard
him and he was not able to come to his feet. He remained on
the floor for a long time. Having someone else in the room
helps prevent such scenarios and patients can go home in one
piece.
Dick was happy to be home even if he had suffered his
setback. After six weeks, Dr. Fishman gave him permission to
practice operating his new implant. He was thrilled with his
amazing apparatus and the ease with which it could be
operated. Now all he needed was the right wife. Since I was
the going candidate, I became the Mrs. Because of the timing
of the surgery and his marriage proposal, I was never sure if it
was love or research that precipitated our union.
I must admit that I was a bit overwhelmed by his
enthusiasm for his new technological wonder. That is not to
say that I was not enjoying our intimacy, but I wanted Dick to
understand that as a menopausal female, my hormone level
was not the same as when I was twenty. And, frankly, Dick
had such a new lease on life that I could not keep up with this
man who was acting like the Titan of Testosterone.
